Recap.

My life seems to be moving in fast forward right now, so I’m doing good just to “rewind” and recap all the fun we’re having in Kindergarten!  Last week was B-U-S-Y.  So here goes…

We started our week with “Kite Day”!  The kids made kites in art class, so the whole campus {all Kindergarten} took a little time out of our day to fly our kites.  It was the most perfect, windy day!  Couldn’t have asked for better!!!  Thank you, God for that BEAUTIFUL day!

 

We mixed a little kite and Easter fun in our literacy and math tubs.  The kids did awesome!

When we weren’t learning about kites, we were knee deep in all things Easter…eggs, rabbits, chicks…you name it!  And, of course, all things OVIPAROUS!!!! 

We all know chickens aren’t the only animals that hatch from eggs, but we spent a good amount of time talking about their life cycle.  We brought it down a step and made a little anchor chart to DESCRIBE our feathery little friends and we used our brainstorming to do a little descriptive writing craftivity.  Super simple, but the kids went NUTS over it!!!!

…and followed it up with a little persuasive writing.  I had the kids write to the Easter bunny and explain why their egg should design should be chosen.  The loved writing their letters! 

Whole group math wouldn’t have been complete without an Easter themed math game, so that’s just what we did.  Well…we actually played a couple, but here was one of their favorites…the BUNNY HOP!!!  I found these darling little bunny masks at Wal-Mart in their holiday section.  As each student got a turn as the bunny, he/she would put on the mask and act the part :)

This was a little mixed operations game and the object was to have the kids practice identifying the symbol and then add or subtract up to/from 10.  I laid out our giant number line and then had my little bunnies pick an egg from the basket.  Inside each egg was a starburst labeled with a number.  Really…I went a little far with that.  I could’ve used something much simpler, but I thought it would be fun for the kids :)  Anywho, the bunny would open up the egg, read the number, and then roll the plus/minus die.  If he rolled a minus symbol, he would start at the number 10 and then HOP down the number line the same amount of spaces he pulled from the egg.  If he rolled a plus symbol, he would start at the same number he pulled from the egg and then HOP up to 10 {counting the number of spaces he hopped as he added up to 10}.  As we added and subtracted, we practiced writing the matching number sentences on the white board.  Differentiating between the plus and minus symbol…and then APPLYING the rules of each…is definitely tricky!!!

 

We also played one of our favorite little games, but this time we did it with an Easter twist.  Remember THIS GREATER THAN/LESS THAN GAME we played back in January?!?!  Instead of *snowballs*, we used Easter baskets and Easter eggs.  Basically, I just tossed out a bunch of eggs, gave two players a little basket, then set them loose to collect as many as they could in 5 seconds.  Then they counted their eggs, found the matching numeral, made a tower to match, and then we compared the numbers. {You can read more about this game…and see it in action {with snowballs}…HERE}

Speaking of math, I found these DARLING little counters at the Dollar Tree a few weeks around the beginning of March and couldn’t wait to put them to use!  They were actually little Easter tree ornaments, but they worked perfectly!!!

I also found these little trays at Wal-Mart and had the kids practice tossing counters in it then either adding or subtracting the two numbers on which they landed.  I’m also using them this week for a literacy activity…I’ll share that with you as soon as I take a picture {I’m a visual learner :)}

Finally, we ended the week with an Easter egg “scramble” and a little party.  Fun, fun, FUN!!!!  I think it’s safe to say we ALL earned last Friday off!!  And what a GOOD Friday it was!! 

Now I’m off to finish cleaning and decorating the casa. Mr. Spouse’s family is coming in from Michigan and Indiana to visit and stay for a few days and the house is FAR from “company ready”…you know what I mean?!
