The Penguin Who Wanted to Fly

This *might* be one of my favorite penguin books…

The Penguin Who Wanted to fly {by Catherine Vase} is PRECIOUS.  The story is adorable, but the illustrations are downright ADORABLE!  We did A LOT of non-fiction penguin related activities, but we had to stop it down for a bit and use this book to make some text to self connections…along with a little craftivity, of course!  Making connections is a HUGE piece in our reading assessments and we try to seize every opportunity to get our kids to make those connections!

Please excuse the quality of these pictures…my iphone camera isn’t the best ;)  I got a little camera happy with the new baby and it died and I keep forgetting to charge it! 

“I wish that I could use the computer.” 

I had to clarify this one and make sure she knew she could use the computer in my classroom!!  She assured me she was talking about the one at home!  HA!!!

 

“I wish I could be a mermaid and swim in the sea!” 

 

“I wish I could be Rudolph because he has a red nose.”

“I would like to make a cake for my friend.”

I reminded her that I am her friend and she can make a cake for me ANY time!  HA!

I do realize the little penguins look like Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb, but darnit…they’re too stinkin’ cute!  The kids had a BLAST writing about what they wished they could do…it was really neat to see them so into their writing.  And they always love assembling little craftivities.  So if you’re looking for another little penguin activity to add to your collection, make sure you pick up this book and download the picture above for your download of the writing sheet!
