Conversation Heart Math. A Fun, Hands-On Freebie!

I'm always looking for ways to make learning hands-on and FUN.  Just like all of you, I scour the dollar bins at Target/Dollar Tree/Wal Mart/{insert store name here} in search of the *perfect* hands-on manipulatives/counters.  Don't we all love making learning fun?!  Turning the ordinary everyday things into learning materials for our littles?!  Of course we do!

And just like you, one of my favorite seasonal counters to use during the month of February are the tried and true...and completely disgusting...conversation hearts.  {Y'all...I'm not a fan.  They have the consistency of chalk and I'm really not into eating anything that tastes like something my 2nd grade teacher used to write with.}  However, I DO love using them for learning purposes!!!

This week we're spicing up our math activities using these chalk flavored candies.  I also have several bags of conversation heart stickers I picked up at Target, so we're using those, too.  My kids are having an absolute BLAST and really getting into the {commercial} holiday spirit!  Anything to make learning FUN!

My kids are obsessed with ANY activity requiring the use of a bingo dotter. For this activity, the kids got to choose 3 conversation hearts, count the number of letters on each, record the numbers inside the hearts, and dot the greatest number.  I've had several kid-sized requests for this activity to make it's way back into the rotation and I'm happy to comply with that request!

Of course, we'll use any excuse to practice adding and that's just what we did here!  We grabbed two conversation hearts, counted the number of letters on each and wrote them down, then added them together and recorded the sums! LOVE.

We recently introduced subtraction and this is what we have on tap later this week.  A fun little *math path* of subtraction!  My oldest loves coming into my classroom at the end of the day and scouring all the activities I have planned for the week.  He loves all things math, so he tested out this little game for me and FELL.IN.LOVE.  Bless his sweet little heart.

We've had so much fun...and looking forward to so much more!!...with these activities that I thought you might like 'em, too!  Click the pic below to download these activities...use 'em this week or file 'em away for next year!

PS:  I now have a new obsession.  Parenthood.  I finished Scandal and Revenge so I needed something else to mindlessly occupy my nights.  OMG.  I can't.get.enough.  Somebody please rip me away from Netflix because right now we have a very unhealthy relationship.  My expanding waistline is proof!!!!

  12. Thank you for sharing! I totally agree with you-candy hearts are yucky!! But they make great manipulatives. :) We have kiddos who are just not ready to handle the addition so I could just have them write the number of words. They need practice with that. Do you differentiate for any of your strugglers?

    1. Yes!!! That's a GREAT idea!!! I still have a few sweeties that need to practice that, too. I actually have a basket full of construction paper hearts that I let the kids use for number writing practice. I just give them some dice and have them roll and write a number on each to match. It would be great to set those convo hearts in there, too! I definitely differentiate instruction. For the addition activity, I had a small group work with me and we did the activity together while the rest of my friends worked independently. For the most part, their independent centers are differentiated, but I planned the addition activity as a whole group type activity so I helped my little friends who were finding it a little challenging :)

  19. Thanks for the freebie!! I have a bunch of those Target heart stickers, and I've been thinking of some ideas on how to use them. You gave me a new one I hadn't thought of. On to TV. You must get back to Breaking Bad. I never thought I'd like the show. I really didn't enjoy the whole first season at all, but they kept saying: stick with it, it gets better. If you already watched the first season, you'll love the rest. It's addicting. I actually bought the last 1/2 of the last season (cause it wasn't on Netflix yet). And I may have watched it after school in 1 night until 3 in the morning!! I actually think I went through a period of withdrawal when it was over too!!

  20. First things first, Parenthood is addicting! My boyfriend and I watched all 5 seasons in about 2 months! Talk about couch potatoes. We're (patiently) waiting for the Olympics to be over so it finally continues! To me, it's the perfect show. Enough said.
    And second, that activity is awesome! I'm still on maternity leave so I'm not celebrating Valentine's Day in the classroom this year but I'm keeping this for 2015 :)
    Thanks for sharing!

  21. Thank you so much for sharing this cute activity! I appreciate all you do and share. I could say it a thousand times over. Literally on my to-do list this week was to 'study how Cara Carroll does lit/math stations". A thank you is not enough! Now to decide if I can actually make a trip to Target with only buying these heart stickers...{currently participating in a contentment challenge!}

  22. Thank you for this wonderful freebie! I think my Pre-Kers will be able to complete 'The Greatest Love of All' activity! I can modify the difficulty by just picking conversation hearts that are not as wordy. I ditto the excitement of finding a great manipulatives, tubs, etc. I found the most adorable plastic heart counters at the Dollar Tree a week or so ago! 50 for $1- wahoo! Thanks a bunch for the adorable ideas and products! Happy early V-day!

  28. These activities look so fun! I love that you incorporated the holiday into your math lesson. I have found that a helpful way to get kids excited to learn is to use methods that use stories and pictures rather than traditional memorization. City Creek Press has some great picture based books and software that make learning fun and engaging while still being effective. Check out all of their products here:
