As promised, here are a few plant themed literacy & math activities for you! Sorry I didn’t post them last night…I fell asleep…fully clothed!!!!…at 8:30 and didn’t get out of bed to change into my jammies until sometime around 2 a.m.! All those late, sleepless nights caught up to me!!! Click on the pics for the downloads :)

I don’t have too many station activities because I’ve been using everything from Kelly & Diane’s Plenty of Plants Unit! I was in a pinch on Sunday night…I spent the whole weekend celebrating my just turned 3-year-old and didn’t devote much time to planning! Yikes! I quickly clicked “buy” and can I just tell y’all…saved.my.LIFE!!!!! Ohmiword…a definite MUST.HAVE if you’re studying plants! Love it all!!! My kids are loving it all, too!
Since we’re studying plants AND the oi/oy spelling pattern, I decided it would be fun to do some dirty word work this week, too! I stole took some soil from Mr. Spouse and filled up a few different baking sheets with it and had the kids practice writing their “oi” words in SOIL :) They loved getting dirty!!!
We’re also using our fake COINS to practice writing “oi” words, too!
We’re still LOVING poetry and this week I decided to introduce cinquain poems. {Speaking of which…how do y’all say that?! sin-KWAYNE or sin-CANE???} Anywho…we read several kid created cinquains and then learned all about how they’re created. The same day I introduced the soil for word work, we made a cinquain about soil, too. We brainstormed adjectives, action {‘ing’} words, and how it made us feel. It was great for practice! They really loved brainstorming together, so I thought it would be fun for them to make one of their own. Cinquains are pretty tricky for first graders, so I knew they needed a planning sheet where they could write out their thoughts and create a rough draft BEFORE giving me a final product. This really made them think about the differences between adjectives and verbs and helped them organize their thinking. After I helped them proofread and edit, we created these little cuties…
Our topic was “plants”. I let them choose the type of plant they wanted to describe & write about. Our little version of a first grade cinquain! They did pretty darn good, too! Click the pic to download the planning sheets & cinquain template.

I’m sure there’s something I’m forgetting, but I can hear my boys wrestling in bed right now, so I’m gonna head out and make sure they don’t break anything…or each other! HA!!!!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing! I actually teach second grade, but I LOVE your blog and try to use as much as I can with my second graders--so much of it meets my standards, too! Now that I've been teaching for a bit, and see the "big picture" a bit better, I'm really trying to tie all subject areas together and your blog has helped so much! I'm a little obsessed with your blog and the other second grade teachers from my school and I want to field trip to your classroom! Sadly, we're not sure the school would splurge for that from Omaha, NE! Thanks again for sharing so many awesome ideas! It's truly appreciated! -Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome! I'm sitting here trying to come up with some center activities and ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom - got em! Thank you. You saved my teacher butt.
ReplyDeleteDitto about the Junie B. Jones Cheater Pants! I just finished reading that aloud to my firsties, and kind of wanted to try a cinquain with them. So now I can! You should read just that chapter to yours - it's awesome. Love you!

ReplyDeletePlant ideas! Fabulous!! My kinders aren't so much into poetry that isn't extremely rhymey but if Junie B. does it first, it'd be an easy persuasion. :) Thanks for sharing!!

ReplyDeleteWe finished reading Junie B. Jones Cheater Pants last week and my grade ones were eager to write their own cinquains. I think they did a pretty good job but wish I'd had your planning sheet before we started! We'll use it next time. I posted our cinquains on our classroom website. If you have a chance, check them out.

Thanks for sharing the great freebies! I just finished putting up the bulletin board of spring cinquains yesterday. They turned out great and the kiddos loved them! Although our watercolor flowers weren't what I had hoped for-- they went home on Friday and we drew pictures yesterday:-)

ReplyDeleteYAY! We are making "sing-Cane" poems and this is perfect...when I'm not sure how to pronounce something I go to dictionary.com and you can listen to the pronounciation! Thank you for all you EVER. SO. CUTE. STUFF!

Thank you for all the freebies! Perfect timing for my poetry unit!!
ReplyDeleteYou have so many wonderful resources. Thank you for making them available to all of us. I am interested in purchasing your SCHEDULE cards, but I can't locate them on TeacherPayTeacher. I clicked the picture of the schedule cards and it loaded to a scrib website. Unfortunately, the cards are archived and I would need to have a membership to access the cards. Do you have them available elsewhere? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAmazing of you to share!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas! :) Wikipedia says that you have to pronounce cinquain like that:/ˈsɪŋkeɪn/. I've never heard of that before! In Germany we've got sth. called "Elfchen" (a minimisation of the number eleven). It goes like this: line 1 = 1 word, line 2 = 2 words, line 3 = 3 words, line 4 = 4 words and line 5 = 1 word...that makes eleven words. :)
ReplyDeleteDitto all the admiration and thanks above! Great ideas! So appreciative that you share!
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to thank you for the great resource!! I am currently student teaching in a first grade classroom and we are working on poetry. Your planning sheets will come in handy! :)
